English 11 S/H – Syllabus                                                                                 
Mr. Richards

 

Objectives: After this class, the student will be able to:

  • Read and analyze various types of American literature
  • Understand the history behind that literature
  • Think critically about the impact that this literature has had on the world
  • Write in various forms about said literature
  • Participate in class discussions to further grasp the progression of American society

 

Readings: The class will sample collections of American writings from the late 1600s up until the early to mid 1900s. Genres will include short stories, fables, poems, plays, and 2 (maybe 3) novels. They include (but are not limited to):

 

The Crucible by Arthur Miller, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne,

The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

Various poetry and short stories by Anne Bradstreet, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Washington Irving, Edgar Allen Poe, Mark Twain, and more…

Student Expectations: As per typical school procedures…

  1. Students will actively participate in class activities and will complete all assignments.
  2. Students respect class and faculty members.
  3. Students will be in their desks when the bell rings.
  4. Students will bring all of their materials to class each day.
  5. Students will take care of personal concerns prior to or after class
  6. Students will put trash in the garbage cans and return materials to their appropriate classroom locations.

Attendance: Every absence and tardy will affect a student’s participation grade and will inhibit their access to instructional information and knowledge. Absences deemed excused may be subject for point retrieval through extra credit. Excessive absences and/or tardies may result in a lack of credit for the course as per school policy.

Grading scale: Classwork/Homework: 30%            
Quizzes/Journals: 20%                                                                                           Test/Projects: 40%                              Participation: 10%

The rules are short and sweet as to avoid confusion.

Consequences:

            Students must also adhere to the school’s policies. I shall be following the school consequence plan very strongly this year. To break one of the classroom rules, however, would result in the following:

            1. Warning / 1st Write up

            2. 2nd Write up / Call Home

            3. Sent to Prime Time for 1 period (as per the school consequence plan)

4. Depending upon the type of consequence, one more period will be added, or sent to administration

5. Sent to administration to be handled accordingly.

 

Materials: Pencils and/or Pens

Notebook paper

3-ring Binder organized into the following 4 sections

            -DGP (to be done in class M-Th)

            -Vocabulary

            -Notes (written down from Power Point)

            -Journal questions and answers

 

Make-Up Work Policy:

            It is the students’ responsibility to contact the teacher regarding any missed work. The student will have 5 days to make up any missed work. If a student misses a test or quiz, the student will be expected to make it up on the returned day. If a student is absent on the day a project or paper is due, the paper should be delivered to the school by the end of the day (3:30PM) or emailed to the teacher (andrewrichards@wcps.org)
