Letters of Recommendation

Recommendations from counselors, teachers, coaches, and community leaders include information about your character, personal strengths, or unusual qualities that are helpful to admissions committees.

Give individuals writing you letters of recommendations or filling out any reference forms, 2-3 weeks notice. Let them know in advance what you need. Do not ask them at the last minute. Provide them with a stamped, addressed envelope.

1. Have your resume completed, as you will give it to the person writing the recommendation, allowing them ample time (2-3 weeks) to write a thorough letter.

2. Give your resume to your teacher along with an addressed stamped envelope or set a time for you to pick the recommendation up from them.

3. Follow up with the teacher who wrote the recommendation to make sure it has been completed and mailed (if applicable). The teacher may want to keep a copy. Thank them for their time and for their support!

4. DO NOT expect to read the letter. This information is usually confidential.

School Counselor forms/ Secondary Reports: Some colleges and/or universities will have a form that your school counselor will need to complete. Submit the counselor form to student services or directly to your counselor 2-3 weeks in advance. This form will be sent directly to the college.
